The start of the new year brings with it the opportunity for people to make changes in their lives.
The biggest change that many try to make, and often struggle to accomplish, is exercising more and trying to live a healthier lifestyle.
While your intentions may be pure, your heart (and body) may try to betray you on the journey to better health.
Here are seven tips that will help you not only set your fitness goals for the coming year but also help you achieve them.
Be Realistic
Be realistic when setting your fitness goals. If you have never run before don’t expect to join the Boston Marathon in May. But there is no reason you can’t start working toward participating in a 5K come the spring.
Once you create your goal you should then ask yourself the following three questions:
- How big is the goal?
- What does it take to achieve the goal?
- Can you see yourself reaching the goal?
Then talk to a professional trainer about setting up a program to help you answer those questions and achieve your goal.
Be Specific
When you set a goal make sure to determine exactly what it is you want to do. Instead of saying “I will go to the gym three times a week,” you could say “I’m going to lose 15 pounds by June.”
The more specific you are the more you will be able to focus on the goal, and the easier it will be to create a plan for success.
Track Your Progress
Have a visual way of tracking your progress, such as the MyZone system used at AMP Fitness. Being able to see a visual representation of the work you are putting in while you are doing it will keep you motivated. It also allows you to set mini-goals – you burned 500 calories at your last workout, can you do 525 this time? – to shoot for while you work toward your bigger goal.
Be Consistent
Creating a consistent routine will help you optimize your results and should be one of your main fitness goals. Once you establish a program that works, you’ll become more efficient and it will be easier to adjust your routine as you make progress. If you aren’t sure where to begin, know that just showing up to work out is more than half the battle.
Focus on Creating Healthy Habits
It is easy to focus solely on results, especially if you see other people at the gym outperforming you or if someone has the body type you want. But rather than focus on the results, keep your attention on developing the habits needed to help you achieve your goal.
Give Yourself Time
We all know people who go all in on something – either a crazy diet that fizzles out after a few weeks or someone who only goes to the gym in January – so it is important to be reasonable when setting your goals.
It is very difficult to make a drastic change in your lifestyle and have it take hold, and you will most likely not get stronger or faster every day that you workout. But each workout will make a difference, even if it is not immediately noticeable, and take you one step closer to reaching your goal.
Enjoy the Process
Exercising and dieting don’t have to be complicated, boring or something that makes you miserable. Remember: exercising is a great outlet for relieving stress, so don’t make it something that adds more stress.
The best workout routine or diet is the one that you can maintain for a long period of time and make a daily part of your life. Experiment to find out what works best for you. If you hit a bump in the road along the way, don’t get angry. Just make an adjustment and keep working toward your goal.
