AMP Fitness is pleased to announce that it is now offering VO2 Max testing at its Beachwood facility.
A VO2 Max test is a measurement that reflects a person’s ability to perform sustained exercise, and is generally considered the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. The test is suitable for a wide range of individuals, from the sedentary to elite athletes, and provides trainers and clients the tools to set realistic goals and assess improvement.
VO2 Max is the maximum rate of oxygen consumption that can be attained during the most intense exercise possible. The measurement requires that the client breathe into an oxygen consumption analyzer during a short, all-out effort on a treadmill as part of a graded exercise protocol. The CardioCoach collects the data to calculate personal target intensity zones and create specific target heart rates, allowing trainers to develop a workout routine to maximize efforts and attain the desired results.
“VO2 Max is a valuable tool to assess performance and evaluate training regimens, allowing athletes to add structure and purpose to their training program and, in turn, gain a competitive edge through the application of sport science principles.” – Larry Tedor, AMP Fitness Owner
“Many people are inefficient exercisers, with no understanding of what specific heart rate, intensity or duration would best help them reach their specific goals, such as fat burning, endurance training or cardio conditioning,” said Larry Tedor, owner of AMP Fitness. “An initial VO2 Max test can clarify the specific target heart rates that will enable each individual to reach their fitness goals more effectively, with less fatigue and fewer injuries.
“The test also determines the number of calories burned during every level of exercise, providing valuable information when designing a weight-loss program. Periodic retesting provides motivating feedback as the fitness program progresses.”
The science behind VO2 Max testing offers an additional benefit to competitive athletes.
“VO2 Max is a valuable tool to assess performance and evaluate training regimens, allowing athletes to add structure and purpose to their training program and, in turn, gain a competitive edge through the application of sport science principles,” Tedor said. “Even though extensive training can sometimes cause an athlete to reach a plateau in VO2 Max, the test results can still be used to make further improvements in performance.
“By pushing to increase their anaerobic threshold (AT) and maintain that threshold for longer periods of time, athletes can enhance both their endurance and cardiovascular performance.”
As the definitive test of cardiovascular fitness, VO2 Max testing provides three distinct benefits, as it helps you:
“An initial VO2 Max test can clarify the specific target heart rates that will enable each individual to reach their fitness goals more effectively, with less fatigue and fewer injuries.” – Larry Tedor, AMP Fitness Owner
- Get the most out of your workout: Each person has an optimal training zone, sometimes referred to as a target heart rate. The charts that are often found on exercise equipment showing target heart rates are actually just averages based on age and weight. A VO2 Max test measures your precise target heart rate based on anaerobic threshold, then calculates individual target intensity zones. These zones give you the precise heart rates necessary to optimize each level of exercise and maximize your results.
- Decrease fatigue and injury: Frequently we push ourselves thinking, “no pain, no gain.” The truth, however, is that pushing beyond one’s optimal training zone leads to fatigue and discomfort. It will also cause increased soreness after the workout and may contribute to an exercise-related injury. When you know your zones and use them for training, cardiovascular exercise is comfortable, meaning that you can go the distance.
- Burn more fat: VO2 Max testing reveals the exercise level that will optimize a person’s ability to burn fat. The term “aerobic exercise” is commonly used in relation to burning fat, but without an accurate measurement it is difficult to determine what level of exercise intensity would be aerobic, or fat burning. Now, with VO2 Max testing, you can know the precise level of intensity that will maximize the amount of fat you burn.
