If you are looking to add another dimension to your core workouts then it is time to get on the floor and embrace your inner animal.
Forget walking like an Egyptian and start crawling like a gator and a bear.
While planks are a tried-and-true method for giving your core a good workout, it can get boring just staying in one place while performing a plank. To add some variety to your workouts, and up your game in a way that will leave your core in great shape, try a gator crawl or bear crawl the next time you are at the gym.
Gator Crawl
This abs exercise engages the entire core in an effort to keep your body stabilized, while also during additional calories by adding movement, making it a perfect blend of cardio, stability and strength training.
To perform a gator crawl, start in a push-up position with your feet on sliders (or anything that will slide over the surface with minimal friction). Walk yourself forward with your hands, dragging your body along the floor, for at least 10 yards. Rest for 30 to 60 seconds and then repeat the crawl back to where you started to complete one set. Repeat one more time.
Bear Crawl
A bear crawl is similar to a traveling plank. During this exercise you have to maintain the same rigid, neutral torso you would while in a plank position, only now you are adding movement. As your arms and legs move, the muscles in your core must resist the urge to rotate and flex, providing you with increased stability, strength and power.
To perform a bear crawl, get down on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and your knees off the ground. Crawl forward for at least 10 yards without letting your knees touch the ground. Rest for 30 to 60 seconds and then repeat the crawl back to where you started to complete one set. Repeat one more time.
Once you have mastered the basic bear crawl you can add some pushups to give an extra boost to your chest and arms. Start with five pushups, bear crawl for at least 10 yards, do five more pushups and then, without resting, bear crawl back to the start and do five more pushups. Repeat one more time, or as many rounds as you can complete.
