You know the look I’m talking about after you’re done with your workout? That sometimes splotchy, flush red hue on your face when you look in the mirror. While it is a normal reaction after you’re done getting your sweat on, I bet it’s not exactly the look you’re going for when you need to face the world outside the gym. Here’s a few quick and easy tips from make-up artist
Jennifer Naideth on how to calm the redness.

Take her advise on saying adios to that red face and return to your normal complexion the next time you finish a hot and sweaty workout. It gives another meaning to a post-workout cool down.
- The cold towel face mask. This one little trick has you heading for the cold tap straight from the sink. Grab a hand towel from your gym bag or use one provided by your gym. Drench it under the cold water and apply. “Hold it on your face like a face mask for a few minutes,” said Jennifer. This should start to reduce some of the red hue.
- Cold shower and washcloth. Go one step farther by taking the washcloth trick into the shower — a cold shower! Not only will the cold water feel refreshing and close your pores, but it should help send the blood back, away from your face. So instead of taking your usual warm post-workout shower, cool it down, and bring the mask in with you.
- Use essential oils. Jennifer’s favorite tip: apply essential oils like lavender, tangerine, peppermint, and wild citrus to your face. She never heads for the gym without these essential oils in her gym bag.
- Ice your neck. If your crunched for time and can’t get in the shower, try an ice pack applied to your neck. It should start to cool the blood going to your face and reduce redness. It’s amazing how fast your face changes from cherry red to slightly flushed. If you don’t have ice, try a cold water bottle and put it onto the soft part of your neck where it meets your jaw bone (under your ear).
