Hi everyone, my name is Kim Wolff and I am here to share with you my experiences as I start my internship AMP Fitness.
First, though, let me fill you in on who I am, and why I decided to begin this journey down the path of health and fitness. I am 37 years old and have spent the last 30 years riding, training and caring for horses. I spent most of my previous career as a Three-Day Event Rider, which is basically a triathlon in the equestrian world that consists of three phases: dressage, show jumping and cross-country jumping.
Eventing is by far the most challenging, rewarding, expensive, dangerous and heart-breaking equestrian sport that exists. With that being said, I’m sure you can imagine how broken my body and my bank account is after 30 years in the sport!
The turning point for me came three years ago as I found myself flat on my back in a field, with the most excruciating pain I have ever felt radiating through my entire body. At that point I decided that competing wasn’t fun anymore, so I basically stopped riding, gained a ton of weight, and found myself barely able to bend over and lift a 50-pound bag of feed. I had officially hit my all-time physical bottom and, in the process, lost pretty much all of my self-respect and confidence and I continued to pack on the pounds.
A short time later I lost my father to cancer. That turned into my wake-up call as I realized it was time to stop feeling sorry for myself, listen to my dad and go do something with my life.
I signed up with a personal trainer at my local YMCA and began a healthy eating plan. I had no idea how to do even a basic movement, such as a squat, but I did know that from the second I walked into the gym I was happy and, finally, my life had direction. After a short time of working with a trainer, I decided I wanted to make personal training my career. I want to help people just like myself overcome the barriers life throws at them, both physically and mentally.
I did pretty well for the first year, losing 40-plus pounds and stronger every day, but it wasn’t until I began training at AMP Fitness that I truly started to feel my self-confidence returning. The trainers at AMP have not only helped me push through those last few mental and physical barriers, but they have also helped me to believe in myself enough to actually believe I could become a great trainer.
At this point in time, I am down 56 pounds from where I started, am bending over and lifting with ease, and most of my old achy injuries no longer bother me. I am currently enrolled at the National Personal Training Institute, where I am achieving well above my own academic expectations, which is, once again, truly a confidence builder.
So here I am, beginning my internship AMP Fitness! Today was my first day shadowing Larry Tedor, head trainer and AMP’s owner. What an amazing wealth of knowledge he has to offer! (Not to mention the most amazing clients that I get to meet from all walks of life.)
Today I learned several new exercises and how to pair them up differently for each individual client. I also learned what to do and not do with pregnant women during a workout session, and how calcium is released and used by muscles during exercise. I spent several hours at AMP, but it felt like minutes because there is so much to learn and absorb.
I can’t wait to see where this amazing opportunity will lead me! Stay tuned and follow me on this wonderful life-changing journey!
Until next time.
Kim
