The American College of Sports Medicine recently announced its annual fitness trend forecast and for the first time, exercise pros say wearable technology will be the top trend in fitness in 2016.
The results were released in the article Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2016: 10th Anniversary Edition, which was published in the November/December issue of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal.
The survey was completed by more than 2,800 health and fitness professionals worldwide and was designed to reveal trends, rather than fads, in various fitness environments.
According to the survey, here are five fitness trends to watch for in the new year.
Wearable technology. Introduced just a few years ago, wearable technology includes fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices, such as the MyZone system used at AMP Fitness.

High-intensity interval training. HIIT involves short bursts of activity followed by a short period of rest or recovery. These exercise programs are usually performed in less than 30 minutes and are at the heart of the personal zone coaching system at AMP Fitness.
Educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals. Given the large number of organizations offering health and fitness certifications, it’s important that consumers choose certified professionals. All of the fitness professionals at AMP Fitness are certified through the National Personal Training Institute.

Core training. Core training stresses strength and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of the abdomen, thorax and back and typically includes exercises of the hips, lower back, and abdomen, all of which provide support for the spine and thorax. Core training often uses stabilizing devices such as exercise balls, BOSU balls, wobble boards, and foam rollers.

Exercise and weight loss. In addition to nutrition, exercise is a key component of a proper weight loss program. Health and fitness professionals who provide weight loss programs are increasingly incorporating regular exercise and caloric restriction for better weight control in their clients.
