Me, hire a personal trainer? Really? My friend Karen had just told me about the weekly Saturday morning workouts she was attending at AMP Fitness in Beachwood. She knew I was looking to lose weight and become more physically fit. I had already started my fitness journey nearly three years earlier when I could no longer ignore the scale’s dire assessment – 209 pounds. I’m 5-foot-5-inches tall, which meant that my BMI was nearly 35, placing me clearly in the obese category.
But much more troubling were the physical consequences of carrying around all that extra weight — I had diabetes and high cholesterol, and my blood pressure was just a couple of points away from hypertension territory. I was tired all the time, and my right knee hurt. I was only 41 and I felt like a mess. But even after losing almost 35 pounds with the help of Weight Watchers, I was still unhappy with the progress I was making. Although I was smaller, I was flabby. And I still had a ways to go to get my weight under control. I began thinking that I needed more help.
So I took a leap of faith and met with Larry Tedor, the owner of AMP Fitness. I still remember walking through the door that first time. I had no idea what to expect and, frankly, at that time working with a personal trainer seemed to be a vain thing to do. Who was I to need someone to help me exercise? Wasn’t that just for rich people? But I was determined to meet my goals, and AMP was my best hope.
My first impressions were all positive. Larry was professional and encouraging, which immediately put me at ease. The AMP studio itself is immaculate and stocked with equipment. At the end of the consultation, I remember Larry looking at me and saying, “I think you’re going to have great results.” And he was so very right! Sometimes I can’t believe my reflection in the mirror.
“I’m much more physically fit, which means I have more energy. I’m so much happier than I’ve been in a very long time, and I now look forward to every day.”
Of course the benefits of working at AMP have included weight loss — I’m down more than 20 pounds in the year I have been a client, and am closing in on 60 pounds total since I began my journey. But that is just the beginning. I no longer have diabetes and high cholesterol, and my blood pressure is normal. I’m much more physically fit, which means I have more energy. I’m so much happier than I’ve been in a very long time, and I now look forward to every day. I was also pleasantly surprised at how affordable the sessions are.
The support I receive from Larry and his personal coaches has kept me motivated, focused and on track during the good and bad times in life. I’m a completely different person than I was even a year ago, and I like the new me much better. I think I’ll keep her.
I continue working at AMP for all of those reasons as well as a host of others:
Personalization: The fitness programs are personalized to your specific goals and needs. There are no one-size-fits-all programs here. Even during group workouts, the coaches adjust the exercises according to each person’s fitness level. They know how much to push you and when to let you take a quick break. And no training session is ever the same!
Safety: The trainers make sure your form is correct, ensuring that you not only are exercising correctly but that you get the most from the workout. There are no crazy workouts, just challenging ones.
Friendliness: Larry and his staff are not just great coaches, but they are great people as well. They keep you moving through your workout in a firm but respectful manner.
Privacy: AMP offers a studio experience, which means that you aren’t going to have a bunch of strangers standing around watching your every move, which can be intimidating. Once you get to know the trainers and other AMP clients, they start to feel like a second family.
MyZone monitoring: Being able to see how hard you are working definitely motivates me to keep going and push myself through each session.
The Challenges: Calorie burning, MEP and weight-loss challenges, while optional, are a lot of fun when you sign on to do them. Looking forward to seeing what new ones Larry has in store for us this year!
Last, but not least, AMP makes fitness fun! And that is saying a lot coming from me, a person who hated any form of exercise for most of her life. I can honestly say that I look forward to my sessions.
Thank you guys!
