We are now two weeks into the new year and, for many, those resolutions you made at the start of the month to create a better, healthier you in 2015 are starting to fade a little bit.
If you feel yourself falling into this category don’t worry, you’re not alone. Everyone starts off the year with good intentions, but sometimes we all need a little boost to keep us going.
According to Larry Tedor, owner of AMP Fitness, here are five pitfalls that people can fall into and steps to follow to help you be resolute about your resolutions.
Unrealistic goals: It is a rare person who can actually lose 35 pounds in four months
Fix: Your goals should be challenging, but ultimately attainable. If your goal is to lose weight, then do it gradually and steadily. Statistics have shown that an individual is more successful at keeping weight off when they lose about one to two pounds per week.
Lack of support: It’s hard to sustain motivation. As social beings, humans do better with goal attainment when they have support and scrutiny from others. If you’re on a diet and no one else knows, then it may be easier for you to stray.
Fix: Be sure to tell everyone you know about your resolution(s). The more people you announce it to, the more people you will have to support you along your journey. There’s no shame in using a bit of peer pressure to help accomplish your resolutions.
Share your goals with your friends and family. It’s another way to build accountability, especially in the Facebook era. You could exercise with others and create your own workout group. You can motivate each other and as you have made a commitment to another person, you won’t want to let them down.
Failing to make a plan: We’re all so busy these days, if something doesn’t make it onto our daily schedule or to-do list, it’s not going to happen.
Fix: Make a plan ahead of time. Decide how many days a week you actually plan on working out, then actually schedule your workouts in your calendar — just as you would with any other appointment. Put them in a time slot that can’t be changed. Make sure to treat your daily workout just as you would any appointment.
Being too tough on yourself: Big expectations can yield even bigger disappointments. Being intolerant of slow progress or occasional setbacks can undo motivation and cause us to give up on resolutions without ever realizing that we were the culprit.
Fix: We often set ourselves up for failure. Don’t overload yourself. Resolutions are generally easier to handle when you make small goals that don’t come with big expectations. If you focus on those small goals you won’t be too pressured. If you do fall off the wagon, get back on. Keep believing you can do it!
Making excuses: There will always be times when you’re feeling exhausted, overly stressed, or just don’t feel like working out and want to go do anything else except head to the gym.
Fix: Don’t give in to your excuse. No matter how tired you are, how much you’ve got going on in your life, even if you have a slight head cold or drank too much the night before, don’t give in. Keep your momentum. If you still have a difficult time with this then hire someone who can hold you more accountable.
