One of the keys to effectively sticking with a workout program long enough to see the results you want is variety.
If you have grown tired of doing the same thing over and over, it may be time to add Tabata training to your workouts. Tabata training is a high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout that only lasts four minutes, but is one of the hardest and most intense workouts you can do.
According to the National Personal Training Institute, during Tabata training you work hard for 20 seconds, pushing yourself as hard as you possibly can. Then you rest for 10 seconds. Then you repeat until you have completed eight rounds of that exercise for a total of four minutes.
There is no set exercise that you have to do in those 20 seconds, as you can perform squats, pushups, rows, mountain climbers, or any exercise that works your large muscle groups.
Tabata training also helps to improve both the anaerobic energy system (e.g., the system responsible for short, high intensity exercise, such as sprints) and the aerobic energy system (e.g., the system used for endurance exercise, such as long, slow running). Since you are targeting both systems you are receiving more reward for your efforts.
The idea for Tabata training was developed by Dr. Izumi Tabata, a professor at the Faculty of Sport and Health Science at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, along with the head coach of the Japanese speed skating team. The duo wanted to find out if very short bursts of high intensity exercise, followed by even shorter rests, would improve the performance of the team’s skaters.
To test the effectiveness of this training regime, Dr. Tabata took study subjects through a high intensity four-minute Tabata workout using a stationary bike. He compared the results with another group of athletes who followed a different workout, working at an even higher intensity for four to five rounds of 30 seconds, followed by two minutes of rest.
The results, published in Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise, were that the Tabata athletes improved their body’s ability to use oxygen more effectively, which translated into improved performance on the ice.
The Tabata program is a great addition to someone who wants a great workout in a short amount of time, and can be included in a workout plan like the one offered in the AMP Fitness Express 30 session.
